Week of Jan. 26

Emma was the student of the week this week. She brought in her "Me Bag" and her VT teddy bear.

Math-We are working on shapes, area and perimeter. We have used many different benchmarks to help us estimate! Some fun activities we did are finding the perimeter of our classroom and mapping out 100 feet. Using our hand-span to measure is a cool tool!

For our POD we have been working on reviewing our double-digit multiplication strategies. The two strategies that we use most often are partial products and distributive property. We also use the lattice method. I like partial products best!

Specials-In art we worked on our clay sculptures of our faces. In music we are learning how to use the recorders. In PE we are doing a dance unit with two cool songs.

In reading we've been working on our element cubes. We are excited to put them together! In read aloud we are liking it because it's cool how they travel back to 1763.

Social Studies-We are working on tracking bills and learning more about what happens at our state house. Mrs. Randall has been taking small groups to explore what bills are being talked about and if we would like to write our own. We are learning more using a booklet called "Under the Golden Dome" and using web sites. Today we will be getting a booklet called "The Adventures of a Bill". I learned that the state's motto is "Freedom and Unity".

Elf-I took a video of the puppet show (check out our wiki to see this video. It was took long to upload to my blog), learning how animals migrate and live and stay warm in the winter. We also watched a slide show of different kids of animals. Some animals camouflage into trees to stay alive from predators.

Science-Last week we did an experiment on bird beaks and how many different pieces each bird beak can pick up. We made a single bar graph on how many pieces of food each beak could pick up. This is a video we took of the experiment happening.

We are having fun learning about what is matter and the properties of matter. We did an experiment on air to see if it was matter and it turned out that it was. I know air is matter because it takes up space inside the balloon and you can feel it inside the balloon.

Hope you had a great week! We can't wait to visit our K-Buddies this afternoon! They are learning about poetry so we will be sharing our favorite poems with them. A poem that I've written is called "Candy".
Sweet sugar melting in your mouth
candy
colorful and sour
candy
little big chewy or hard
I love candy!

Week of Jan. 18

Some of our math questions.

We presented measurement questions using the elmo. Each group shared evidence to support their answer.

We created measurement benchmarks to help us estimate when we can't find the exact measurement.

We watched a VT counties video. We learned about what each counties history was.

Some of us added to our class Wiki.

Book jacket prompt-Big Words for Little People. It was fun to make different stories!

Wyatt shares his "me bag".

In science we tested how many pennies it would take to move a dish with different weights in it. It was pretty fun! Dropping the pennies inside the cup a challenge!
In social studies we went on a fun VT web scavenger hunt! Did you know that a beluga whale was found in Charlotte?

Have a good weekend!

The Week of Jan. 4

Welcome back!
We finished our read aloud book called Rat Trap by Michael J. Daley. I thought it was a really exciting book because there is lots of action and adventure on the space station! This science fiction book is one of this year's DCF books. We are now reading The Time Travelers Book 1 in the Gideon Trilogy, by Linda Buckley-Archer. So far we are enjoying it!

Aurora was the Student of the Week! I learned that she sings in a singing competition each year at a county fair! She brought in a picture of herself singing on stage when she was five! She has two American Girl dolls and her grandmother gave her some pins of the dolls. She likes pandas and has a large collection of them! Aurora brought in pictures of her brother and when her family built their house.

On Tuesday a group of dancers from a Williston dance group came and showed us some of their moves. They did hip-hop. It was cool to watch!

Mrs. Randall is using book jackets for writing prompts and this week we used the book jacket from Fancy Nancy. We also created Fancy Nancy words and Plain Jane words. For example, I did crown is plain and tiara is fancy!

We can know access Weekly Reader on-line and learn more about the articles. We can also watch cool videos and other neat options.

Also, I used the Flip camera to take video during the week and we used one clip for a writing prompt. It was fun to do! We had a great time choosing whose point of view to write from.
