Our Friend in Africa!

An update from Wyatt and his family!

We've been in Africa for 1 1/2 days now and are having a ball. All is well. Smooth flights.

We just saw a pack of warthogs wander through our friends yard! Picture attached. I am also attaching pictures of us walking this morning (also near our friend's house). We hiked through the bush for a bit and then hit this dirt road, which we took back to their house.

We are going camping for the weekend in South Africa on a game reserve. Hopefully Wyatt will have more wildlife to report on Monday.

Week of Feb. 8

Football and baseball cards-100 of them!

Tuesday was the 100th day of school! We had all-school morning meeting was held in the gym so kids could use the stage for skits about the 100th day of school. Marco and I went to Mrs. Munson's room to take pictures and video of her students' collections of 100 things. In writer's workshop we chose from 3 cool prompts do do a short write on. We continued with health class and learned about not smoking or chewing tobacco.

This is what your lungs look like after smoking over a long period of time.

This is a bubbly lung. After smoking it fills with tar and looks like this! Gross!

On Wednesday we had the science fair and got to see some good experiments. I learned that wool can create static electricity with a comb and some paper.
On Thursday we had our end-of-unit math assessment on geometry and measurement. I thought it was pretty easy!

On Friday we had an early Valentine's Day celebration! Some of us gave out Valentine's. Mrs. Randall gave us much needed pencils! :)Mrs. Randall read us a book about a little pig who persuaded a fox not to eat him. The fox did so much work that he didn't have the energy to eat the pig! After, we helped each other create strong statements to support our stance for the persuasive letters to our legislators.

Have a great next week!

On Monday in math we continued our study of polygons and found definitions. We switched our desk pattern. We put together our element cubes and they turned out well! Once they were all up we had a museum walk to take a closer look at them. If you wanted to read one, we put it in our "books to read" section of our reader's notebook.
In science had a question-what are the states of matter? The states of matter are solid, liquid and gas. There is also another state of matter called plasma. We did a lot of science. We discussed if certain things were matter. For example, dust is matter. It takes up space and it has mass.
In art we sculpted our faces out of clay. It was pretty hard because we had to put water on it to make it soft again.
In math we have been doing Logopaths on the computer. We also played "guess my rule" which we would find a shape and give three clues for someone to figure out what the shape was.
In Reader's Workshop we watched an awesome trailer of the movie Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief! This inspired us to create booktalks and responses that catch people's eye!
In health we reviewed what we had learned k-3 and we learned more about bacteria and viruses.
In Spanish, Senora Rena started a book about Pablo Picasso.
Also this week, Mrs. Randall showed us a picture prompt of her daughter, Sofia, in a crying fit! We could write about her point of view of what we thought happened that night or the last time you cried that hard. I thought that she was crying because she didn't get enough sleep, but Easton took her pen and that REALLY upset her!
We took a cool field trip to Montpelier and had a really good time! We got to see a bill pass, took a tour of the State House, visited the VT Historical Museum, and interviewed our legislators.

See ya!
